Fortec: Coupler solution for the Australian market

The Fortec Coupler solution Fortec® is a full performance (tension / compression / cyclic / fatigue) rebar splicing system designed for the connection of concrete reinforcing bars from Ø12 to 40mm. Fortec® system is designed to withstand an ultimate tensile performance up to 800 MPa, thus resulting in Bar Break performance on most of the rebar available on the market.

Splicing methods

  • Standard splice (type A)

Easy connection by bar rotation until full thread engagement.

Thanks to the parallel thread

 – No risk of cross-threading

 – No risk of thread mis-match.

  • Position splice Tуре (B)

Even when both bars cannot be turned, the Fortec® coupler.

The coupler is fully engaged onto the extended thread of the connecting bar
(step 1).

The assembly is simply completed by bringing the bars end to end and screwing back the coupler onto the first bar until full engagement (step 2).

 

  • Position splice Tуре (C)

The Position splice Type C is different from Type B in that it has an additional lock nut to maintain the continuation bar in a determined position.

Transition Splices

  • When there is a need to splice bars of different diameters, It Is allowable in most cases to reduce the slze of the larger bar and to use a standard coupler.

  • The Fortec® range Includes speclal transitlon couplers to connect bars of different dlameters.

Weldable Coupler

  • For composite construction where concrete reinforcement bars must be welded to a steel structure, Fortec® weldable couplers must be used. This is a nut made of a weldable-grade steel that bears a large chamfer suitable for single bevel butt welding.

Caging Splices

  • When reinforcing bars cannot be aligned end-to-end (which is often the case in cage fabrication), Fortec® Caging splices provide an effective solution. Both bars are threaded using the standard Fortec thread, and a “Caging Assembly Set” is used to join them together.

    This assembly set consists of three preassembled components: a caging stud, an extended bridging coupler, and a locknut. The end of the caging stud features a female thread designed to connect to one of the bars (ideally the upper bar in vertical cage configurations).

    To complete the connection, the bridging coupler is first unscrewed from the stud and then threaded onto the second bar. This system allows for a gap between the two bar ends, provided it does not exceed the limits specified in Table 3.

    If one of the bars is cast into concrete before the reinforcement is assembled, its thread must be protected using a pocket former.

Pocket Formers

  • Pocket Formers are plastic accessories that fit the threads of Fortec® bars in order to form a reservation in the concrete. They can be nailed to a wooden formwork through the holes in their flange.

    It is advisable to apply a mold-release agent to the pocket formers prior to concreting. Simply use the same agent as for the formworks.

Nailing Plate

  • Nailing plates are plastic accessories that fit the threads of Fortec® couplers to form a reservation in the concrete. Like the pocket formers the nailing plates can be nailed to a wooden formwork through the holes in their flange.

    It is advisable to apply a mold-release agent to the pocket formers prior to concreting. Simply use the same agent as for the formworks.
